The latest episode of Single’s Inferno 4 has sparked controversy, with viewers debating whether contestant Yuk Jun Seo acted rudely towards Chung You Jin during a double date. The incident occurred while Jun Seo and Si An were on a double date with You Jin and Jung Seo. During a game of pool, a comment made by Yun Seo to You Jin and Jung Seo led to accusations of rudeness.

The Subtitle Discrepancy

Initial reactions online, particularly on platforms like Reddit, focused on subtitles that appeared to translate Jun Seo’s words as “shut it” or a similar harsh phrase. This interpretation ignited anger among fans, who already held negative opinions about Jun Seo’s past behavior towards You Jin. Many viewers expressed their disapproval, calling his alleged comment disrespectful and insensitive. Some viewers on Reddit expressed their anger with comments like:

“That was so rude of him, honestly he is lucky that Youjin is sweet and demure and it was not me. Telling a woman to shut up or be quiet would have had the complete OPPOSITE effect.”

“He’s BEEN rude. Especially to Youjin on multiple occasions but people on this subreddit treat him like some messiah. Anytime you criticize him they come for your jugular. Well, I’ve been saying it from the start. He’s a jerk & he treats women poorly.”

A More Nuanced Translation

However, the controversy took a turn as viewers pointed out discrepancies in the subtitles. Many viewers reported that their Netflix subtitles translated Jun Seo’s comment as “Could you keep it down a bit?” or similar phrasing. Others clarified that the direct Korean translation is closer to “Could you be a bit quiet?” This difference in wording significantly alters the perceived tone of the comment.

Conflicting Interpretations

The revised translation led to a split in viewer opinions. While some still felt that Jun Seo’s comment was rude, especially given his previous interactions with You Jin, others considered it a less serious offense, particularly within the context of a lighthearted date. Some viewers defended Jun Seo, suggesting that the initial outcry was an overreaction. One viewer commented,

“The subs on mine read different, “Could you keep it down for a bit?” but it still felt rude, especially knowing how he treated Youjin in the past”

while another wrote,

“You should be careful with the subtitles. I’m watching it in French and it was said something like”could you please make less noise?”. He wasn’t disrespectful”

A Korean viewer even provided further context, stating,

“Korean here – properly translated he says something like “can you please be a little more quiet over there”, with an emphasis on a “little”. It doesn’t come off as rude imo but too tense and serious/petty, not to mention tone-deaf with Sian standing there unhappily next to him. 😂”

The Context of Past Behavior

Regardless of the exact translation, much of the negative reaction stems from Jun Seo’s previous interactions with You Jin. His past behavior has led some viewers to interpret even a mildly worded request as rude or condescending.
