Spread the love

Newtopia” continues to deliver a rollercoaster of emotions in its fourth episode, weaving together touching flashbacks, heart-stopping zombie encounters, and the raw, painful realities of survival. This episode, in particular, delves deeper into the complex relationship between Youngjoo and Jaeyoon, while simultaneously plunging us into the brutal chaos of a world overrun by the undead.

A Flashback to Forgotten Feelings:

The episode opens with a poignant glimpse into Youngjoo and Jaeyoon’s college days. We see a young Youngjoo, surrounded by admirers, yet her heart is set on the seemingly indifferent Jaeyoon. This flashback provides crucial context, revealing the roots of Youngjoo’s lingering affection and the subtle dynamics that have shaped their current interactions. The simple act of Jaeyoon teaching her how to tie her shoes becomes a powerful symbol of their connection, a memory Youngjoo clings to in the midst of chaos.

Survival and Despair at the Military Base:

The military base scenes are a stark contrast to the nostalgic flashbacks. The resurrection of Hyung-bae throws the soldiers into disarray, highlighting the sheer terror and confusion of their situation. Jaeyoon’s attempt to eliminate the threat, followed by Soo-jeong’s decisive action, underscores the brutal choices they are forced to make.

Sergeant Jung’s emotional breakdown after witnessing Sung-wook’s suicide is a devastating portrayal of the psychological toll of the apocalypse. The raw grief and near-suicidal despair are palpable, making this one of the episode’s most impactful moments. The decision of Jaeyoon and In-ho to leave the base, despite the arrival of the supply chopper, speaks to their desperation to find their loved ones.

The Drunken Theory and Zombie Encounters:

The exploration of the “drunken immunity” theory with Tripeater adds a touch of dark humor to the episode. The idea that intoxication might offer a reprieve from the zombie virus is both absurd and intriguing, providing a brief respite from the relentless tension.

Youngjoo’s drunken escapade in the streets, while reckless, leads to a thrilling zombie encounter, showcasing the ever-present danger. Tripeater’s unexpected intervention adds another layer of complexity to his character, hinting at a potential for redemption or, at the very least, a survival instinct.

The episode concludes with the Tower 77A Outpost members eagerly awaiting the arrival of the supply chopper. This cliffhanger leaves us wondering whether the helicopter represents salvation or a new, unforeseen threat.

Romance, Humor, and the Question of Pacing:

Newtopia” Episode 4 effectively balances moments of humor, romance, and horror. Jaeyoon’s heroic defense of Youngjoo against a rude customer is a classic romantic gesture, while the zombie encounters provide ample opportunities for dark comedy.

However, some viewers have raised concerns about the show’s pacing. While the emotional depth and character development are commendable, the overall plot progression feels somewhat slow. The hour-long runtime could benefit from a more streamlined narrative, with a greater focus on driving the story forward.

The performances, particularly those of Jisoo and the actors portraying the military personnel, are outstanding. While the pacing could be improved, the episode’s emotional depth and character development make it a worthwhile watch. The question now is: will the helicopter bring hope or further devastation to the survivors of Newtopia?
