The dust has settled on Netflix’s series, “The Devil’s Plan: Death Room,” and emerging victorious from a field of 14 sharp minds is Jeong Hyun Gyu. Yet, his triumph comes with a weight of reflection and regret, as he recently addressed the public backlash, offering apologies to fellow contestants Kyuhyun and Yoon So Hee, and pledging to donate a portion of his substantial prize money.

In an interview held at a café in Anguk-dong, Seoul, on the morning of May 27th, alongside director Jung Jong Yeon, Jeong Hyun Gyu opened up about his journey through the high-stakes brain games. While his strategic prowess ultimately secured him the victory, his path wasn’t without its controversies.

Jeong Hyun Gyu faced a barrage of online criticism for a dismissive comment towards Choi Hyun Joon – “You know basic math, right?” – and for game moves perceived by some as betrayals of Kyuhyun and Yoon So Hee. The intensity of the public’s reaction led him to change his social media profile to a succinct, “I’m sorry.”

Reflecting on the online storm, Jeong expressed deep thought and accountability.

“I sincerely participated with the goal of winning, but I understand that some viewers felt uncomfortable with my approach. I take full responsibility and have spent time reflecting,” he stated.“I don’t think I won because I was better than everyone else. I just did my best in each situation and was lucky to have support from others.”

The experience, he revealed, has been a profound lesson in communication.

“It made me realize how important it is to express your true intentions to people. I am continuing to reflect on that,” he emphasized.

The bond between Jeong Hyun Gyu, Kyuhyun, and Yoon So Hee was a notable aspect of the show, even sparking a dating rumor between him and Yoon So Hee. Addressing their close relationship, he expressed sincere regret for the criticism they subsequently faced.

“We played together for a long time and eventually reached the final three. I wanted to compete fairly with them, but they had to leave the game. I feel responsible for asking them to join my alliance, which may have caused them to face criticism,” he acknowledged.

As for his 380 million KRW (approximately $277,000 USD) prize money, Jeong Hyun Gyu confirmed his earlier pledge to donate a portion of it.

“I don’t have detailed plans yet, but I want to treat the other contestants to a nice meal. Since I caused some trouble for the show and the viewers, I plan to donate a portion of the prize money as well,” he shared.
