The ongoing saga between K-Pop sensation NewJeans and their agency ADOR took another dramatic turn on June 4th KST, during the second court hearing concerning the validity of the group’s exclusive contracts. In a move that signals a hardening of their stance, NewJeans, through their legal representatives, firmly rejected any suggestion of a settlement, declaring that

“The relationship of trust has been completely shattered. We have crossed a river and can no longer return.”

This unwavering position comes amidst escalating tensions and contrasting arguments presented by both sides at the Seoul Central District Court. While NewJeans‘ legal team emphasized the irreparable breakdown of trust, ADOR, on the other hand, indicated a willingness to consider a settlement if the court provides a decision on the case.

A Deep Divide: Arguments from Both Sides

NewJeans‘ legal counsel articulated a clear reason for their desire to terminate their contracts, arguing that “ADOR failed to fulfill its essential duties of management as outlined by the management contract.” They highlighted abrupt changes in management following the departure of Min Hee Jin, leading to a perceived loss of independence for NewJeans. Despite “numerous requests to correct its mistakes,” ADOR allegedly failed to comply.

ADOR, however, painted a different picture, claiming that NewJeans‘ reasons for contract termination have been inconsistent.

“Every hearing, NewJeans changes up the reason for why they decided to terminate their exclusive contracts,” ADOR’s side stated, suggesting that the group made the decision to terminate first and is now attempting to retroactively justify their actions.

The debate further intensified when NewJeans‘ legal team challenged the sufficiency of ADOR‘s presented evidence regarding management duties. They specifically questioned ADOR‘s claim of fulfilling responsibilities by presenting a list of potential producers, demanding further disclosure on meetings with producers like Hitchhiker, including details of discussions and outcomes.

With NewJeans firmly rejecting settlement talks, the stage is set for a protracted legal battle. The third court hearing has been set for July 24th. T
