K-Pop and drama star Minho hit the Asian music scene in May 2008 as a member of SHINee under SM Entertainment. While he’s the group’s main rapper, sub-vocalist, and visual expert, the news this week isn’t about that at all. Read on to find out more.
A Long Marathon
GlobalMediafine reported that on November 1, Minho participated in the 2026 BC Seoul Marathon and did really well. The singer clocked in at 3:00:18, missing the coveted “sub-3” mark by an agonizing 18 seconds.
However, things got rather complicated after that. Koreaboo noted that video footage popped up showing his pacemaker putting hands on his back to physically shove him forward. Now, instead of just celebrating an incredible run, people are arguing whether that literal “boost” broke official athletic regulations.
The Controversy
The outlet explained that “the joy of finishing was short-lived as controversy flared online. A video surfaced showing a man, believed to be a pacemaker, pushing Minho’s back while running, sparking debate.”

It seemed unfortunate because he was so happy and gracious after the marathon. Minho had posted up a photo of his run and bubbled over with happiness, saying in part, “Thank you again to everyone who cheered on the streets. My challenge continues. Please watch over me and keep supporting me.”
He also talked about how the endurance run wasn’t easy. He added, “That’s why life is like a marathon. After 30km, my willpower really got tested a lot. Rather than regret, this race made me realize my own shortcomings. I’ll challenge it again. Sub-3, just wait.”
Runners Can’t Be Assisted
Sadly, the controversy took away a lot of his joy, so now, instead of celebrating his first marathon, questions are being raised about whether the physical assistance broke the rules.
Reports included the fact that World Athletics rules explicitly say that athletes can’t be helped physically as they run, and the pacemaker created some questions as to whether the action helped to propel him forward during the marathon.
Fans Were Initially Impressed
The controversial video hadn’t come to light immediately, so initially, K-pop fans cheered SHINee’s Minho. When @shamyshinytan0525 shared a video about the marathon on November 1, only good comments arrived. One fan said, “Such a powerful Charismatic Minho!”
Others also admired his strength and tenacity. He’s run shorter races in the past, but the marathon was extra-special. So, one follower posted up a whole row of gold star emojis.
Another thought is that news about K-pop stars or K-drama actors is often complicated by contracts, broken promises, and conflict. Because of that, many fans feel the athletic singer brings something else to admire apart from the glitter and shine of the performance stage.
