‘The Lament Of Autumn’ Has Viewers Questioning How Dark Is Too Dark

Spread the love

There’s more to Asian entertainment than just K-pop groups because folks also enjoy K-dramas, but this weekend, fury started over a C-drama production titled The Lament of Autumn. Read on to find out why.

A Toxic Love Story?

The Lament of Autumn was described by C-Drama Review as “A Beautiful but Toxic Love Story.” The outlet also explained the cast and crew, saying that it was directed by Kuk Kok-leung, Guo Hao, and Wang Hui. The drama brings Ling Xi’s novel to life in a story of high-stakes affection during the turbulent 1920s Republican Era.

Starring Cheng Lei and Xu Ruohan, the series delves into political tension, deep-seated social inequality, consuming romance, and wartime hardship. Serious subjects deserve serious performances by actors, but tons of people felt upset.

Why People Are Upset

Koreaboo explained that the plot is about “a student accused of attempting to assassinate the son of a powerful family, and the relationship that develops.” But that’s not what got netizens hot under the collar about the C-drama.

Per IMDb, “During the Republic of China era, student Ye Pingjun is falsely accused of trying to assassinate the Yu family’s fifth son. She gives Yu Changxuan ten days to find the real culprit as he secretly grows closer to her.” But one scene seemed over the top.

In it, Ye Pingjun, who isn’t keen on Yu Changxuan, finds herself in an uncomfortable situation because she isn’t willing to do what Yu wants.

The outlet explained that in one notable moment, a furious Yu Changxuan declares that if words won’t get through to her, physical action will. He forcefully pins her down on the bed and kisses her despite her protests for him to stop.

Is It Really Bad?

Some viewers were so upset that they took to social media to complain that it was just too much. Others said they will stop watching The Lament of Autumn. But not everyone feels the same way. One commenter scolded those folks who were freaking out.

They wrote on X, “there are tons of Chinese series with sweet romance and green flag protagonists. If you don’t like watching a dark character, you can stop doing so. As far as I know, nobody forces us to watch something we don’t enjoy.”

The OP had also expressed their feelings about what seemed like rough scenes in the drama. They had written, “You all are sooo pathetic trying to bring in morality were it should not exist… Not everyone want to watch a drama with sweet romanceee…yes I love forced trope and heavy angst romance..yes I know what the premise of the drama is and I’m still sat for it.”
