K-drama fans can start getting excited because Netflix is making a new historical production called The Generals. Currently, work already started and those who love the history of the Asian nation should enjoy the movie a lot.
A Real-Life Power Struggle
The movie takes a look at changes in power between two famous Korean leaders. If you don’t know, back in the 1980s, Chun Doo-hwan came to power through a military coup in December 1979. While the country was under military rule, it kickstarted the road to democracy.
For Koreans, it was an amazing time to be alive. In real life, after the 1979 assassination of Park Chung-hee, a longtime military dictator, South Korea experienced what was described as the “Seoul Spring.” But on December 12 of that same year, Major General Chun Doo-hwan took over the army through a military coup.

Then, on May 17, 1980, he launched a second coup to tighten his grip on power. He put the whole country under martial law, arrested opposition figures including future president Kim Dae-jung, and shut down all political activity.

The Angle Of The New Movie
According to Yonhap News Agency, the story highlights “the dynamics of those who wielded absolute power” while others worked in the background. In The Generals, Director Yoon Jong-bin, who seems great at showing the tension in modern Korean history, looks more at backroom politics than actual fighting.
The Cast
Notably, for K-drama fans, the cast seems very promising. For example, Ha Jung-woo plays Chun Doo-hwan, the military dictator who held power for nearly ten years.
Son Suk-ku joins the Netflix cast as Roh Tae-woo. Soompi reports that Netflix describes this version of Roh as “a man who has always stood just to the side of absolute power.” One big angle is the tension between the two men at the heart of the storyline. You’ll see Ji Chang-wook acting as a junior officer who sees Roh as “a thorn in his side.”
Additionally, according to the outlet, another central character will be played by Seo Hyun Woo. In the new Netflix movie, he’ll act as “Park Cheol Woong, a public security prosecutor at the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office and an aide to Roh Tae Woo.”
