The ongoing dispute between NewJeans and their agency, ADOR, has taken a new turn. NewJeans recently announced a new activity name, “NJZ,” and ADOR has responded with an official statement expressing their concerns.
ADOR’s Official Statement
On February 7th, ADOR released a statement to TV Report regarding NewJeans‘ name change.
“We would like to share ADOR‘s position regarding the announcement of NewJeans‘ new name,” the statement began.
The agency expressed disappointment that the members had made this decision unilaterally.
“We find it deeply unfortunate that the members made this unilateral decision even before a legal ruling on the validity of their exclusive contracts with ADOR,” the statement continued.
ADOR reiterated their commitment to protecting NewJeans‘ brand value and emphasized their willingness to communicate.
“We want to make it clear once again that we are always ready to meet with NewJeans members or their legal representatives to clear up any misunderstandings and discuss future activity plans.”
The Contract Dispute Background
This name change comes amidst a protracted legal battle between NewJeans and ADOR over their exclusive contracts. NewJeans’ side claims the contracts have been terminated due to ADOR‘s breaches. During a press conference regarding the contract termination, NewJeans members stated that ADOR was obligated to manage the group in good faith for their benefit. They alleged that despite a 14-day correction period, ADOR failed to rectify the issues, leaving them no other choice.
ADOR, however, maintains that the contracts are still valid. In December of last year, the agency filed a lawsuit at the Seoul Central District Court to confirm the validity of the contracts. They also filed an injunction to prevent the members from signing contracts with other agencies or engaging in advertising deals. The legal proceedings are expected to begin next month.
NJZ’s Future Activities
Despite the legal uncertainties, NewJeans, now performing under the name NJZ, is scheduled to perform at ‘ComplexCon Hong Kong‘ next month. Adding to the intrigue, member Hanni hinted at a new song release in a recent interview with CNN. This suggests that the group intends to continue their musical activities despite the ongoing legal dispute with ADOR. The situation remains complex, and the outcome of the legal proceedings will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the future of NJZ.
