NMIXX new EP Heavy Serenade - YouTube

This week on the YouTube channel ReacttotheK, hosts Umu and Jango sat down with Marcus to review NMIXX, or specifically, their fifth EP, titled Heavy Serenade. The trio gathered to discuss the latest release from the fast-moving K-pop scene.

ReacttotheK Reviews Crescendo

The panel kicked off the discussion with the opening track, “Crescendo.” Right out of the gate, the panel, Jango, Marcus, and Umu agreed that the track sounded distinct.

They noted that they enjoyed the interesting “experimental” soundscapes woven throughout the piece.

However, the panel also pointed out that the song felt a little “all over the place” and somewhat frenetic, though they admitted the beat is super driving.

Viewers Weigh In

Viewers quickly jumped into the comment section to share their own takes on the NMIXX review and the song itself.

Django Klumpp left a note thanking the host, writing, “Wow what a fun review and EP podcast with Marcus thanks as always.” He also thanked ReacttotheK host Umu “for having me and to the watchers for sticking with my aimless ramblings and hopefully not too hot takes!! excited to see what people think about this project.”

He didn’t have to wait long before other commenters started dropping their thoughts into the comments section. Another viewer offered a deeper breakdown of the lyrics, commenting, “Well, just like the title of the song ‘Crescendo,’ the ‘deep in shallow’ is also metaphorical meaning. Overthinking or over-feeling viewing something too deeply (deep) when it is actually unimportant or superficial (shallow).”

Meanwhile, one fan simply expressed relief, noting, “Oh! This is the song I’ve been waiting for. Thank you.”

Inside Heavy Serenade

According to several industry updates, Heavy Serenade marks the fifth EP by South Korean girl group NMIXX, released by JYP Entertainment in May this year. Data from Kprofiles indicates that the project consists of six tracks. It features a title track described as an electropop song blending trance, acid house, and drum and bass elements to depict deep, unwavering love.

The release has also attracted attention across the K-pop community. Coverage from the Korean Herald explains that the album goes deep into the idea of love growing in an empty space called Mixxtopia, and group members Lily and BAE made significant contributions to the songwriting.

The outlet noted that “Heavy Serenade blends electronic elements such as trance, acid house, and drum n’ bass into NMIXX’s signature sound.”

The tracklist includes the pre-release single “Crescendo,” alongside the self-love anthem “IDeserveIt.” Other songs include the R&B-influenced “Different Girl” and the English-language closer “LOUD,” which Lily wrote entirely by herself. That stood out because it’s unusual for a group’s main vocalist to receive sole writing credit on a song.

Critics and fans responded positively to the EP, praising its more mature direction and the group’s vocal performances. Reviewers also highlighted the way NMIXX blended multiple electronic genres while maintaining their distinctive sound.

Commercially, the release got off to a strong start. The EP debuted at No. 1 on South Korea’s Circle Album Chart and reached No. 182 on the Billboard 200. Within four days, the official music video had attracted more than 22 million views, suggesting the group’s momentum continues to grow.
