Terrible news arrived in the K-Pop universe when Japanese influencer Mina Chan, 26, was confirmed dead after Seoul’s Yongsan Police Station found her unresponsive in her apartment. And that leads to a follow-up story about how influencers report on tragedies.

Unfortunately, people called in what they belived was a sucide attempt that happened during a TikTok Live but it started before that. Sportskeeda reported that the trouble began at an ENHYPEN concert in late July when Mina tried getting Sunoo to hand a “bouquet of sunflowers” to Ni-ki.
Shortly after, Ni-ki addressed fan behavior on a livestream. He didn’t name anyone, but fans instantly pointed fingers at Mina. According to the Northeast Times, Ni-ki said, “It’s a shame there was someone trying to get noticed and show off,” and added that “some people just want attention for themselves.”
An Escalating Situation
Sadly, Mina also had to deal with a lot of abusive comments online from ENHYPEN fans, AKA ENGENE.
Neither Ni-ki nor the agency, BELIFT LAB, confirmed he was talking about Mina, but that didn’t stop the online mob, though. People online jumped to conclusions anyway. The outlet also noted that despite Mina Chan posting an online apology, the trolling didn’t stop. She’d written, “I deeply regret the rude behaviour I exhibited in America.”
A Dilemma For Influencers
While the news moves very fast across the internet, especially within the K-Pop niche, handling a story about someone dying by self-harm takes a lot of care. Popular genre influencer, K-Pop Spy, took to YouTube a few days ago and talked about facing difficulty dealing with her coverage.
She wrote, “I finished [a Mina video] like 2 times now and both times [it] got blocked for being too inappropriate & mentioning sensitive topics.”

She explained that she wasn’t worried about earning money from the video. Instead, she said she was “just finding ways to try and dilute the language a little bit so it’s at least visible.”
Fans Understand
In the comments section, some fans were grateful that despite the limitations, she is talking about the incident. However, they also understood that it’s not easy. One of them said, “this is so sad, I’m almost wishing you didn’t have to cover a story like this but it’s so important to talk about these behaviors online.”
Another follower commented about Mina Chan, saying “What she went through is absolutely terrible. I can’t believe these parasocial insane…fans went this far.”
While people can empathize with K-Pop Spy, and other creators, for some young viewers, influencers can effectively become real-time news sources. No matter how they try and word their videos, they still work within the parameters set by platforms and their moderation systems.
Understanding The Algorithm
Others understand why stories about self-harm might get flagged. But altering words just to pass an automated filter isn’t the same as genuinely handling sensitive topics safely. Editors can easily end up focusing more on beating an algorithm than protecting vulnerable viewers.
When creators cover stories about harassment, they carry a real responsibility toward their audience and that means they have to stay away from the idea that unverified rumors might start new harassment. That could only escalate the danger.

K-Pop Spy deserves credit for continuing to approach the subject carefully and for making it clear that monetization wasn’t her priority.
